Milton Keynes City Discovery Centre Images

Many of our collections include images. 14,000 of these have been digitised and catalogued.

These cover every aspect of the development of Milton Keynes, highlights include:

  • the first few houses and people moving in the 1970s;
  • the construction of important buildings like the Open University, Christ the Cornerstone Church and the Shopping Centre;
  • key events such as visits from the Queen, Children's days at the bowl, ceremonies at the Peace Pagoda and the 25th and 40th anniversary celebrations.

Three housing exhibitions - Homeworld, Energyworld and Futureworld - were held in Milton Keynes to showcase the future of house design. These exhibitions attracted visitors from all over the UK and abroad and our image library includes a fascinating record of these exhibitions.

A collection of striking black and white photographs taken by the eminent architectural photographer, John Donat, of new buildings and also of architectural models. We also hold photographs of drawings by Helmut Jacoby - these have now become iconic images of the new city. These photographs and illustrations were used in magazines and newspapers in the 1970s to show what was planned for Milton Keynes.

Images are available for use in dissertations and for other educational and research purposes.
